Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. In her early years Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to word associations. Ford began performing in her teens and became part of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she was not a fit. Ford was then able to apply for a spot for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. A classmate of hers were Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993, but she made her television debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. She worked on stage regularly and was a member of The Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. But Tate soon began to garner notice for her stand-up comedy, which she added to her repertoire in 1996.
